Of English origin.

Derived from the Anglo-Saxon form “Ēadweard”, composed of the elements “ead”, meaning “wealth”, “fortune”, prosperous and “weard”, meaning “guardian”, “protector”.

Saint Edward the Confessor was the king of England before the Norman conquest.
