Veronica

Of Greek origin.

From the name Berenice, the Latinized form of the Greek name “Βερενίκη”, “Verenike”.

It means “bearer of victory”.

Sources mention that the spelling of the name also influenced by the Latin phrase “vera icon”, meaning “true image”.

It was the name of Saint Veronica. According to the Church’s tradition, Veronica was a woman who offered her veil to Jesus, so that he would wipe the sweat off his face and when he gave it back to her the impression of his face remained on the veil. It became known as the “Veil of Veronica”.

It was introduced to English speaking countries from France and it was used occasionally during the Middle Ages.
