Adelaide

Of Germanic origin.

From the Old High German name Adalhaid, composed form the elements “adal”, meaning noble, inheritance and “heid”, meaning kind, sort, and in proto-Norse, meaning brightness.

Several members of the old European nobility were bearers of the name: Saint Adelaide of Italy, wife of Emperor Otto the Great, Adelaide of Poland, Adelaide of Holland, Adélaïde of Orléans and Queen Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, for whom several cities of the former British Empire were named, including Australia’s Adelaide.
