Of Native American origin.

It is associated to the Dakota Sioux language, due to the fact that it was the name of the 19th century Dakota Chief Wapasha III.

According to Wikipedia, Winona is the Anglicized form of the Dakota descriptive term Winúŋn, meaning “firstborn daughter”.

Due to the association with Chief Wapasha, the name is also linked to the “Winona Legend”, the tale of “Princess Wenonah”.

It is also the name of several cities in the U.S.A.
