Derives from the ancient city of Tyre in Lebanon, known as «Τύρος» (tyros) in Greek, “Tyrus” in Latin.
It was an important city built around the end of 15th c. B.C.
Tyrian is also a color name, known also by the name of “Tyrian red”, “Phoenician purple”, “imperial purple”. The color was produced by several sea snail species in the ancient city of Tyre.
Tyrion may also be of Old Norse, Germanic origin.
From Old Norse god Týr, son of Odin, associated with law and justice.
It is the name of the fictional character Tyrion Lannister from George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy novels “A Song of Ice and Fire”, adapted for television as “Game of Thrones”.
