Dutch form of the name Gustav.

1) Of Old Norse origin.

From the old Norse name Gautstafr, meaning “goth staff”, from the Norse elements “gaut”, meaning “goth”, “from Gautland”, and “staf”, meaning “staff”, “stick”.

2) Of Slavic origin.

From the Nordic form or the name Gostislav, meaning “glorious friend” or “glorious guest”, from the words “gost”, meaning “friend”, “guest” and “slav” meaning “glory”.
