Hypatia

Of Greek origin.

From the Greek word «ύπατος» (hypatos), meaning “supreme”, “highest”.

A rare meaningful name, Ypatia has never entered the baby names popularity lists.

Ypatia was a renown 3rd century BC Hellenistic Neo-Platonist philosopher, astronomer, and mathematician.

In her time, she was the world’s leading mathematician and astronomer.

She taught philosophy and astronomy at the Neoplatonic school at Alexandria, Egypt and a very popular lecturer followed by loyal students.

A part of her life was depicted in Alejandro Amenábar’s 2009 film “Agora”, starring Rachel Weisz in the role of Ypatia.
